A majority of the green smoothie recipes you will find on our website promote weight loss. They all work similar, but there isn’t a specific vegetable or fruit that magically burns off more fat than another.
The important thing to remember when making a weight loss smoothie is always to keep it healthy with no added sugars (agave/honey) and it has to be dairy-free (no milk/yogurt).
Taking green smoothies as meal-replacement alternatives is the strategy I personally use and recommend for those looking to shed off those extra pounds. The key is to start by replacing one meal every day with a green smoothie.
With that being said, I do not recommend replacing all your meals with a smoothie for more than ten days at a go.
However, I do recommend following and sticking to a diet plan that includes both healthy, whole foods and green smoothies.
The important thing is that you should not just focus on green smoothies. This would not make a balanced diet.
We all understand that losing weight goes beyond what we eat and do not eat. Exercise and the rest of your diet also play very crucial roles.
It is worth noting that while green smoothies will help you lose some weight, they are not the only thing that you need to change about your diet.
It is vital that you do what you can to change the rest of your diet. Plant-based whole food diets are naturally low in calories, and it is almost impossible to overeat; plus, they leave you feeling fuller and satisfied for longer.
To be clear, when I say “plant-based,” I am not necessarily referring to vegan diets.
What do plant-based, whole food diets look like? Here is a good example of a plant-based diet guide for beginners. Once you’ve tried that out, try some delicious non-smoothie recipes. You could also try a one-day meal plan.
Do Not Do Smoothie-Only Diets
To answer the other question, I don’t recommend doing the green smoothie-only diet for a prolonged period. It will not provide you the full nutritional balance you need and you can quickly get sick of them and give up.
As I said earlier, only follow green smoothie cleanses for no more than ten days. Only use a green smoothie cleanse to transition to healthier diets as it will kick start your metabolism to adapt.
My recommendation is that you have green smoothies for breakfast or lunch or both. Choose a healthy veggie and/or healthy fruit, and nuts too, with a whole foods dinner.
Also, consider exercising. I do not expect that you’ll start running 5ks tomorrow; start simple and commit yourself to a 10-minute walk each day and progress slowly.
How Do Green Smoothies Help People Lose Weight?
There are several explanations of how green smoothies help with weight loss.
Reason #1: A Lot of people don’t know this, but average quart-size green smoothies contain about 200-350 calories. Considering that most weight loss plans recommend an intake of about 1500 calories a day, you could drink a couple of smoothies and still be within your targeted daily caloric limit.
Reason #2: Most of the foods available today have been considerably processed. As a result, most of the essential nutrients get stripped away, which means that the food on your plate has little to no health value to you.
While you’re still getting the proteins, sugars, calories, and fiber your body needs, many of the essential minerals, phytonutrients, enzymes, and vitamins needed for our bodies to thrive are missing. As a result, our bodies crave for more food so that they can find these nutrients. Sadly, instead of eating foods that satisfy these cravings, we eat junk food, and an hour later, our bodies still crave for more.
That is where green smoothies come in handy. When you need a snack, simply turn on your blender and make a green smoothie. Greens are a good way to satisfy nutritional cravings. So, instead of eating a junky snack, why not drink a green smoothie!
